Behind the Design: An Engineer’s Tour of Surface Studio

In the latest of our Microsoft Mechanics Surface series, Cindy Louis Wallace, general manager for Surface hardware takes us inside Surface Studio to reveal the engineering and craftsmanship behind its elegant, minimalistic design.

Screen

The team’s goal for Surface Studio was to enable new modes of productivity and creativity. Central to this goal is the Surface Studio’s ultra-thin, 28-inch PixelSense display, providing a large work surface with a resolution comprising of 13-and-a-half million pixels – 60% more than you will find on a 4K monitor.

With each display individually calibrated, what you see on the screen is what you will see when you print. With simple switching between color modes—sRGB, DCI-P3 or VIVID (P3 D65)—the color gamut of Surface Studio can be changed to suit your project, and with the True Scale feature, a page shown full-size on the screen will have exactly the dimensions it will have when printed.

Like its siblings, Surface Book and Surface Pro, the PixelSense display on Surface Studio supports full ten-point multitouch and Surface Pen. The team also developed the Surface Dial as a companion accessory for the free hand when using Surface Pen.

Using capacitive touch and a custom digitizer the screen is able to recognize Surface Dial’s unique signature, bringing application-specific controls to wherever you place the dial on the screen. With such a large work area, Surface Dial gives you access to the menus and options you need without having to break your flow.

Hinge

The three independent spring systems and linkages in the hinge assembly counterbalance the weight of the screen.

The screen actually weighs 13lbs, but thanks to its’ zero-gravity hinge it appears almost weightless when it moves.

Within the machined metal-alloy casing additional a butterfly-array of plates help translate the force of someone attempting to move the screen directly to the hinge.

This design makes it possible to move the screen between vertical- and canvas-mode with just a light touch. The plates also provide stiffening. Despite its thin profile the screen feels solid, barely flexing even when leaning on the screen to work.

Base

The low-profile base is the powerhouse of the system.

The Surface Studio comes in three core configurations, each with NVIDIA discrete graphics with 2GB to 4GB of dedicated GPU memory. Surface Studio configurations range from an Intel Core i5 up to a top of the line, Intel Core i7 with 32GB RAM, and a 2TB/128SSD hybrid drive with high speed read/write access.

To add to their challenge, the team wanted to pack power into a low volume base without compromising the thermal design. The heat pipes, and a custom fan algorithm controlling three internal fans independently keep the unit cool and quiet, while maintaining the CPU, GPU and power supply at stable operating temperatures.

Although small, the power supply is integrated within it and it provides a full complement of ports to connect existing peripherals. Its thoughtful design even extends to the detachable power cable, which includes a locking mechanism so that it won’t detach accidentally.

These are just a few of the highlights of Surface Studio. You can learn more by watching Cindy’s six-minute overview.

The Windows Semi-Annual Channel and Targeted Deployment

$

As you may have already seen on the Windows Experience blog, yesterday we announced that the Windows 10 Creators Update is ready for broad deployment. Additionally, we announced a transition from the Current Branch (CB) and Current Branch for Business (CBB) model of Windows releases to a more predictable, twice-yearly release cadence called the Semi-Annual Channel. With the Semi-Annual Channel, each year we are targeting the release of two Windows Feature Updates, one in March and the other in September, each of which with an 18-month servicing timeline. You can read more about this new Semi-Annual Channel at the Windows for IT Pros blog in Windows as a service: Simplified and Aligned.

Along with this change comes some new terminology, specifically the terms targeted and broad deployment. While these terms roughly correspond with the CB and CBB nomenclature that we've used in the past, they are not an exact translation of these terms and are defined a little differently:

  • Targeted deployment refers to the phase immediately following the release of a new Windows version when it is recommended to conduct your organization's piloting process and to begin deployments to select devices, such as those with the most modern chipsets and capabilities. Surface devices make excellent candidates for these targeted deployments.
  • Broad deployment refers to the phase that follows targeted deployment, where your organizations' pilots and targeted deployments have provided successful feedback and Windows has been vetted for deployment to most or all of your organization's devices.

You can read about these new terms and recommended deployment practices in the updated Update Windows 10 in the enterprise section of Windows Docs, or, for a five-minute video overview, see the Updates to the Windows as a Service model Microsoft Mechanics video.

Where does Surface fit into this process?

Surface devices make excellent candidates for piloting and targeted deployments. The modern form factor, chipsets, and Microsoft-tested and approved environment make Surface devices the logical choice for your first wave of deployments in the targeted phase. You'll also find the latest features and capabilities of Windows on Surface first, like the integration of power management with the Power Slider on Creators Update found first on Surface Pro and Surface Laptop and now available on Surface Pro 4.

New devices also make excellent candidates during the targeted deployment timeframe, especially if your organization's purchase of new hardware aligns with the targeted phase. Not only will these new devices feature the latest chipsets, features, and capabilities, but deploying the latest Windows version to your newest devices helps to eliminate duplication of effort. It makes far more sense to deploy once, with the latest build of Windows, than to deploy your new devices with your organization's standard image for broad deployment, resulting in the need to redeploy those devices again when your organization makes the move to a newer version of Windows.

Visit the Surface IT Center to learn more about Surface devices and the IT practices and tools that make Surface the right choice for business.

Behind the design: An engineer’s tour of the new Surface Pro with LTE Advanced

Delivering on a state of the art LTE architecture while remaining true to the design heritage of Surface, is a significant milestone. It required that the engineering team develop a number of breakthrough engineering and design techniques as shared by Tim Golik, Director of Surface Program Management, on Microsoft Mechanics.

Merging Surface Pro design heritage with always on connectivity

The Surface Pro with LTE Advanced is the latest in the Surface Pro line, which was announced this past summer. If you are not familiar with the Surface Pro, it's our versatile and ultra-light device that transitions seamlessly between laptop and tablet, and the successor to the Surface Pro 4, that gives you even more mobility and performance.

The new Surface Pro offers 50% more battery life than the Surface Pro 4, is capable of 13.5 hours in a single charge, and runs at full power with Intel's 7th generation processors, making it 20% faster than Surface Pro 4.

We also added an additional 15 degrees of kickstand travel that allows the device to go into Studio mode. Further, with the addition of a new enhanced color mode, the PixelSense display is capable of displaying vivid colors without altering skin tones or delicate colors.

The Surface Pro with LTE Advanced goes even further. It supports 4G LTE and is capable of download speeds of up to 450 megabits per second making it the fastest LTE-enabled laptop in its class.1

An unlocked device, the experience of connecting to the internet is like roaming with your phone. Your device remains connected and switches between Wi-Fi and LTE networks automatically almost anywhere on the planet.

To preserve the design principles of the Surface Pro, the engineering team built the LTE architecture from scratch, marking a deliberate shift from the use of readily available off-the-shelf modules which would have increased the thickness and weight of the device.

The team custom built a set of 7 antennae to support 4G LTE bands globally and placed them in the smallest LTE tablet bezels on the market today, without compromise to the size of the device or the display.

Key to this accomplishment was the development of an industry first process to join polycarbonate and magnesium into a single gapless and stepless fusion of premium materials.

To preserve even more space and power, as Tim demonstrates, the team leveraged the new Pro's fan-less passively cooled design to incorporate a custom LTE-advanced modem platform in the space where the cooling fan would have been.

Superior productivity and extensibility

The engineering team chose the state of the art Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X16 LTE modem for the New Pro because it has many features that are not yet deployed on mobile networks meaning that it can be configured for today's world with expandability for the future. The new Pro with LTE Advanced has Cat 9 connectivity and is configured to support 20 frequency bands that cover most LTE carriers around the world.2

To keep you always connected you have the choice of using either a Nano SIM card or an embedded SIM – also known as an eSIM. Using an eSIM, you can go to the Windows store and purchase the service that you want from available service providers to connect you to the LTE network without buying a physical sim card.

Of course, having a device that is always connected, also brings manageability and security benefits. You can send updates, configure policy and manage devices immediately because the device is always online.

These are just a few of the highlights of the design of the new Surface Pro with LTE Advanced. Today we bring to you a great Microsoft 365 powered-device session from the Microsoft Mechanics series with Surface Hub as the hero device for collaboration, presented live during Microsoft Ignite 2017. Surface Product Manager, Nydia Cavazos, and Microsoft 365 Director, Jeremy Chapman, join us to demonstrate how Surface Hub, integrated with Office 365, Windows 10, and Microsoft Intune, provides new tools for a seamless and secure collaboration experience.

Control your device with Touch Back and Ink Back

With a Surface Hub you can turn any PC into a companion device, not only mirroring your display to the Surface Hub screen by Miracast or wired connection as you would with a projector, but also allowing you to interact directly with your applications with touch and ink through the Surface Hub. Your inputs and changes are automatically saved to your connected companion device in real time, allowing you to take your PC with you at the end of the meeting and retain all the input from your collaborative session.

Collaborate with Office 365 Integration

Built-in Office 365 permits you to access your recently-used files directly on the Surface Hub by simply signing in. Once your documents are open, you'll notice how the integration of Office 365 enables you to work seamlessly with support for ink markup and to work together with other users via simultaneous editing.

Ink Intuitively with Whiteboard

Nydia shows us the power of the whiteboard on Surface Hub, demonstrating the ruler, ink to shape, and Hub-to-Hub collaboration. With the latter, remote viewers can view, add notes, move objects, and co-author your Surface Hub workspace in real-time for a collaborative experience even when remote.

Built-in Security

Security is a foremost feature of the Surface Hub experience, proven in its design and customizable security settings. For example, files that require any kind of elevated privileges to access will not run on a Surface Hub. This security measure significantly reduces the potential for malware attack. Moreover, each Surface Hub meeting or session is wiped from the device once the session is complete, keeping your data and meeting contents safe. These security settings can also be customized in the device's settings or by policy through your management tool.

This is just a quick overview of what's covered in the Surface Hub: New Integrated Experiences with Office 365 video. We encourage you to watch the demonstration to learn more.
