Surface Power Management with Modern Standby in Windows 10

$

0

Surface is in a class of devices that uses Modern Standby rather than traditional S3 Sleep. This allows us to manage power consumption right down to the individual hardware components. The net effect is near instant resume times and more efficient power consumption.

In today’s demo bench with Program Manager Joao Botto, we walk through the two Modern Standby modes:

  • Connected Standby, also known as InstantGo, for always-on computing
  • Disconnected Standby for longer battery life

We explain how Modern Standby works, and how you can switch between the two modes.

Understanding Surface Power Management with Modern Standby in Windows 10

If you wish to configure large numbers of Surface remotely or if you have Surface 3 LTE devices and wish to disable LTE in addition to Wi-Fi, you can use the Powercfg command to shift from Connected Standby to Disconnected Standby:

  • powercfg /set dcvalueindex scheme_current sub_none F15576E8-98B7-4186-B944-EAFA664402D9 0
  • powercfg /set acvalueindex scheme_current sub_none F15576E8-98B7-4186-B944-EAFA664402D9 0

To revert back to Connected Standby, use the same two commands and GUID, but change the value from 0 to 1.

We hope that you find today’s overview useful. Keep checking back here on this blog and on Microsoft Mechanics for the latest on Surface management and engineering. Follow us @MSFTMechanics.

Updates for Surface 3 devices

For all Surface 3 devices, updates will be posted at http://aka.ms/drivers/surface3.

Please note that the Surface3 MSI will require a reboot. The reboot is required to complete installation of drivers and firmware. We recommend IT administrators to enforce reboot as quickly as possible after deploying the MSI; not rebooting the device will leave it in an unstable state.

  • If you execute the MSI without the /quiet and /norestart switch  (for example, if you execute the MSI manually on a device), you will see both dialog boxes in the screenshot in Figure.
  • If you execute the MSI with the /quiet switch (for example, if it is executed by a system management tool), you will still see the second dialog box in the screenshot in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Dialog boxes that appear during .msi installation

IT administrators could force a restart using the shutdown /r command, make that quiet, show the user a custom message, and control the time until it restarts, for example, or they could use another restart method that they prefer.

Troubleshooting power management for your Surface during modern standby

$

As we discussed previously, Surface is in a class of devices that uses Modern Standby to give you instant sleep and faster resume times, while using far less power than the traditional S3 sleep used by most PCs. This ability keep devices protected by installing latest Windows Updates even when users are on the move and the device is in standby.

If you experience unexpected power consumption issues, it’s likely that your Surface device will have been interrupted from its lowest power state, DRIPS, more frequently than is usual.

If this happens and you are the person in charge of managing desktops on behalf of your users, Senior Program Manager, Joao Botto returns to show you how to troubleshoot and pinpoint issues by creating and analyzing sleep-study and energy reports for the affected device.

We hope that you find today’s overview useful. Keep checking back here on this blog and on Microsoft Mechanics for the latest on Surface management and engineering. Follow us @MSFTMechanics.

Simplifying Surface Imaging with the Surface Deployment Accelerator

The new Surface Deployment Accelerator (SDA) is designed to simplify Surface image creation and deployment to save you time and ensure you have the latest Surface firmware and drivers.

In our new Microsoft Mechanics video, Milad Aslaner, program manager on the Surface commercial engineering team, demonstrates how Surface Deployment Accelerator’s wizard-based design guides you through the steps to create and deploy Windows images to Surface devices in your organization with automated installation of the latest drivers and firmware.

As Milad demonstrates, the Surface Deployment Accelerator can help simplify the task of image creation.

The Surface Deployment Accelerator leverages the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and Windows Assessment and Deployment Toolkit, and you can install it on Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer.

The SDA assists you with the two primary approaches for installing Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 images on your Surface devices:

  • Using an image installation task sequence to create and install a reference Windows image with the latest Microsoft Surface drivers, updates, and applications, and
  • Using this reference image to re-capture your own custom Windows (WIM) images.

Download the Surface Deployment Accelerator today and try it for yourself.

We hope that you find this video demonstration useful. Keep checking back on this blog and on Microsoft Mechanics for the latest Surface management and engineering news.

Our goal for the Surface Book was to re-define the laptop. Jeff Stewart, Director of Program Management for Surface devices, appeared in this Microsoft Mechanics video to take you on a guided tour of the design and engineering behind the Surface Book, Microsoft’s first laptop:

The Surface Book comes with a 6-million-pixel, individually color-calibrated display, the latest generation of Intel processors, and optional dual GPU, to deliver a highly performant laptop capable of running the most processor-intensive tasks, such as video editing or a CAD design project.

But beyond the fundamentals and the attention paid to performance and comfort – even the keyboard has been meticulously crafted for comfort to accommodate all hand sizes — we wanted to redefine what users should expect from a laptop. Whether using keyboard, touch, Surface Pen, or all three, the result is a device capable of operating as a clipboard, in canvas mode or as a traditional laptop.

As Jeff explains, this wasn’t achieved without a significant amount of engineering and design innovation. One example is the use of shape-memory alloy, or Muscle Wire, to release the display when Surface Book is to be used in Clipboard Mode. This helps produce the thinnest, lightest full featured Windows 10 tablet computer ever created:

Another innovation is the Surface Book’s iconic fulcrum hinge that moves the center of gravity to increase stability without having to increase the overall mass of the base:

We continue our Microsoft Mechanics engineering focus, with a concise but revealing tour of the ergonomic design and performance of the latest Surface Pen with Director of Program Management, Vineet Thuvara.

As Vineet explains, the new Surface pen is designed to deliver a natural and comfortable experience for writing and drawing in the digital domain while also offering a clickable and convenient way for you to interact with your applications. This resulted in some fascinating and unique engineering challenges that required the team to solve for seemingly contradictory goals such as making the tail end of the pen tactile enough to perform and feel like an erasure, yet functional as a clickable button with enough force to fire capable of launching applications. Delivering a natural experience, also augmented the focus on building an intelligent pen that would always be ready for use. The outer casing of the pen in fact, conceals a sophisticated motion activated power management approach. A tiny accelerometer detects and fires up the pen when in motion and extends the battery life of the Pen’s standard AAAA battery, by placing the pen to sleep while not in use. This makes the pen battery capable of lasting up to 12-18 months of regular usage.

Surface Dock is designed to work with the widest range of Surface devices including Surface Pro 4, Surface Book, and your existing Surface Pro 3 devices.

With a single, flexible cable the new Surface Dock quick-connects with Surface. It provides up to 60W of power and expands the range of ports available when you are at your desk, without taking up any USB ports on the device itself.

In this Microsoft Mechanics video, David Spillers, senior program manager for Surface devices, takes us on a comprehensive tour of the new Surface Dock, including:

  • Key aspects of its design;
  • It’s support for Gigabit Ethernet and four additional USB 3.0 devices; and
  • Details on its two Mini DisplayPorts, offering support for up to two external displays in addition to the Surface’s own display, without the need to daisy chain.

He demonstrates how the Surface dock’s design frees you to make full use of Surface in laptop, tablet, and canvas mode while connected to a full complement of peripherals. This video also provides guidance on connecting HD and 4K DisplayPort monitors, and on adapter selection when using monitors with only HDMI or DVI interfaces.

With the recent firmware updates made to Surface Dock, you’ll want to make sure you’re using the correct type of adaptor to get the maximum resolution from your Surface device. If you’re planning on connecting a monitor with a resolution greater than 1920×1200, to get full resolution you’ll need to use an active adapter.

Speaking of Surface Dock firmware updates, you have three options to keep the Surface Dock up to date:

  1. Connecting the device to the dock and updating the device using Windows Update (WU)
  2. Connecting the device to the dock and updating the device using MSI or ZIP file for the device available on the Microsoft Download Center
  3. Using new Dock Updater Tool available from the Microsoft Download Center. This tool is useful if you are an IT Pro looking for a way to update multiple docks in the least amount of time.

Watch for a step by step walk-through of these options in this Mechanics video.

Exploring the physics behind Surface Pen and display interaction

We continue our engineer’s tour of the Surface Pen with a demonstration of the physics behind the pen and display interaction.

A number of design innovations make using the new Surface Pen with Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book a great experience, not just for writing but also for drawing and sketching.

The new Surface Pen was designed with a four-fold increase in pressure sensitivity, to 1024 levels, and can be set to suit each user’s specific needs. As Director of Program Management Vineet Thuvara illustrates, the Surface App can be used to adjust the pen’s sensitivity curve to make it appear more or less dense, and interchangeable pen tips can be used to change how the pen feels against the screen.

The engineering team set a high goal of making the ink appear as if it really is flowing directly from the pen tip, just as it would on paper. As Vineet demonstrates, this was no small task, requiring a reduction in the distance between the pen tip resting on the glass and the display pixels to minimize parallax to less than a millimeter, and optimized use of the GPU and dedicated graphics chips to minimize inking latency.

We hope you enjoy the demo and remind you that you can watch the full Microsoft Mechanics series on the design and management of Surface devices here.
